Communicating Complex Topics

January 16, 2026
12:00 PM - 1:00 PM

Max Planck Florida Institute for Neuroscience
1 Max Planck Way
Jupiter, FL 33458

Join us for a lunch-and-learn with Dena Seidel, co-founder of Rutgers University Immersive Learning through Science Storytelling Lab, as she shares practical strategies for partnering with researchers to elevate complex work into narratives that connect with real-world audiences.

An Emmy award–winning documentary filmmaker and interdisciplinary social scientist, Seidel has pioneered a scientist-centric approach to storytelling—one that empowers technical specialists to articulate the value, impact, and humanity behind their work. Drawing from her experience designing Rutgers’ first research-based filmmaking curriculum and leading student-driven science documentaries, she will explore techniques communicators can apply immediately, including:

  • Facilitating deeper conversations with researchers who may be hesitant or overly technical
  • Identifying narrative arcs within data-heavy or highly specialized projects
  • Translating complexity without sacrificing accuracy
  • Building trust and collaboration between communications teams and technical experts
  • Building partnerships for science story distribution

This session is designed specifically for communication, PR, and marketing professionals who operate at the intersection of public engagement and technical expertise.
